Guyanese culture celebrated this weekend
Dominoes enthusiasts, dramatists, cricketers, politicians and expert duck-curry chefs will rub shoulders at the Guyana Independence Festival in Scarborough this weekend.
President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo will attend the annual two-day event honouring everything Guyanese at L'Amoureaux Community Centre on McNicoll Avenue at Kennedy Road.

Organizers plan to paint the centre and its grounds in Guyana's national colours by giving free flags to the first 500 festival-goers before the opening ceremonies at noon Saturday.

Guyana flags, bandanas, pins, shirts and other materials will be sold the whole weekend, Honorary Consul Danny Doobay added in a statement.

The festival promises performances by celebrated Guyanese artists, including a preview of Guyana's own Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts.

There will be soccer, softball and dominoes competitions, plus a trade show and both Amerindian and Guyanese crafts.

Guyana's national team will play cricket matches with Canadian teams in competitions on both afternoons, with finals on Sunday.

Other highlights are the Independence Lime (hang out) from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday; and the duck curry cook-out, expanded to 10 chefs with public tastings at 2:30 p.m., at "Taste of Guyana" Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

People are urged to take transit to the festival because parking is limited.
